Reunion
On
Father’s Day, June 17, 2018, four days before her 66th wedding
anniversary, Barbara Adams Norris, 87, passed away at her home,
in Falmouth, MA, surrounded by her husband Barry Neil Norris,
daughter Linda Jeanne Norris, son David Neil Norris, and
daughter-in-law Linda White Norris, all of Falmouth.
Barbara was the
daughter of the late Judge Russell Hartley Adams and Louise Finley
Adams and sister of Jean Adams Soffin. She grew up in Mt.
Lebanon, a Pittsburgh, PA suburb, graduating from high school in 1948. On
June 6, 1952, Barbara graduated from Wellesley College, and two weeks
later married her beloved Barry. Barbara and Barry
spent their first two years together at Edwards Air Force Base, where
Barry served in the Air Force, followed by two years in Milwaukee, WI,
where the couple purchased their first home, had their first child, and
Barry had his first construction industry job. The next 20 years, in
Barbara’s home town of Mt. Lebanon, they raised their three children.
Always feeling a strong connection to Cape Cod, Barbara spent her
last 33 years living where she loved, overlooking Oyster Pond in Falmouth.
Survivors also include her
son Jeffrey Adams Norris of Gainesville, GA, granddaughter Lesley
Anne Norris of Philadelphia, PA, granddaughter Lisa Louise Walnut
of Forsyth, GA, and her nephews Winstead Eric Adams and Beckett
Miles Adams.
Always modest, Barbara
requested no funeral service. Instead, in loving memory of their Mom and
cherished wife, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the
Falmouth Public Library, commemorating her life-long love of reading and
education, or to her favorite charity, the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
All of us who knew and loved Barbara will forever miss her.
Ann Pritchard
(deceased)
delivered the sad news from Barry Norris: Barbara passed this
afternoon from severe stomach cancer. Two of her children were with her.
We all will miss her very much. Barry - June 18, 2018.
She
added this note: Even in our very early years, as young girls, Barbara
was the epitome of peaceful grace. That remembrance of her will be ever
pleasant and present for me.
Heard
from husband, Barry, that Barbara is still doing well - everything's
OK so far - May 2010
May 12th, 2005 - Dear
Bill,
I'm sending along to you the sad news of the death May 10th of
Roseanne
McIlvane Casey, apparently from liver complications associated with
Hepatitis C.
Roseanne
and I go way back to Junior High days when she moved to Colony
Circle, two houses away from me. Her death brings back many memories of good times together including her
being a brides maid in our wedding 53 years ago. When I last saw
Roseanne
2 years ago at a small gathering of "old" '48
friends, she seemed fine -- just as witty and enthusiastic as ever.
That's how I'll always remember her. Barry and I continue contented Cape Codders.
Barry happy with his
artificial hip and still playing racquetball and yours truly seeing
without glasses (except for reading) after cataract surgery.
We're grateful for good health, and hope you and your family are enjoying
the same. Barbara Adams Norris

Robert
Alderdice
November 1972
Orlando, FL
Mystery solved!!
I received this letter from Bob's daughter:
Dear
Bill,
Bob Alderdice was my father and he died in November, 1972 after being
sick for about five and a half years with a brain tumor. He was 41.
He and my mother had moved
from Cleveland, Ohio to New York City in 1961 (or 1962?). We lived on Jane
Street in Greenwich Village until 1971, when we moved to 24th St. in
the Chelsea neighborhood.
After high school in Mount
Lebanon, my father attended Dickinson College for two years and then transferred
to Penn State. I believe that he continued acting in college (as he had in high
school) and I know that he was a member of the Penn State debate team, which had
many successes during his time. He was named to Phi Beta Kappa and continued on
to Harvard Law School, where he received his law degree.
After law school, my father
moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he met my mother, Kay Woolfitt (as she
was known then) on a group blind date. They were paired together because they
were the two tallest. They were married in the late 1950s, and I was born in
September, 1960. When my father got a new job as an attorney with the phone
company, we moved to New York, which is where I grew up and lived for many
years. My husband and I now live in Eugene, Oregon.
I'm glad you have good
memories of my father in high school. I know he enjoyed his time there and had
many good friends.
Sincerely, Kit Alderdice
- March, 2012
Bob's death was positively
confirmed at the 60th reunion by several people
Bill,
Don Haus (deceased),
Age 30 would be too young for Bob's death. We have photos of him
at the 25th reunion in 1973 wearing a big McCarthy button when he would
be 43, so he passed away sometime after that. After being an attorney
in Cleveland, he was an attorney for AT&T in NY and may have lived in
NJ. Bob is not listed in the SS Death Index but if wives assume
the SS benefits after husband's death, the SS# remains active and the
deceased not listed. Everyone agrees Bob is gone, we just can't
identify when he died.
Tom Arganbright
(deceased)– June 2008, 2 minutes later
Bill,
Bob passed away when he was about 30 years old of a
brain hemorrhage. He was an attorney in Cleveland, Ohio. I had lunch
with him several times when I used to go into Cleveland. I ran into
his dad one day, and he told me about it. -
Don Haus (deceased), June 2008
May 28, 2008 from
Bud Stevenson
(deceased):
Tom
(deceased),
on one of our reunions, way back (I can't remember which one),
John Mitchell (deceased)
was working with me, and he was like your "Mr. Keen, Tracer of Lost
Persons." (Or is that “Mr Lost, Tracer of Keen Persons”?)
When we got a hold of Bob Alderdice, he thanked
John
for calling, and Bob gave him a phone number to charge all the
calls. It was an AT&T free number. I think he was with AT&T in New
Jersey at the time.
Five years later, we called to get the free number from him, and we were
told he passed away.
That's the last I heard of him. I think maybe that was the reunion we
had at the Hilton Airport. (Bob,
which one was there? –Tom)
Thanks so much for your efforts on the reunion. You've certainly made
it much easier for us and less time consuming.
Regards,
Bud Stevenson
(deceased)
P.S. I'm still working and
Bob Woeber
(deceased)
is part time
You want to try to
resolve the deep mystery of Bob Alderdice? We have been
carrying Bob Alderdice as deceased based on
Roy Mc Ewen's
(deceased)
note that he ran into him in 1965 at AT&T in NY and when calling back
later was told he had died with no other information. In our 1973,
25th Reunion brochure, we listed him as deceased in 1972. But now
let's look at the class photo as the centerfold in the brochure and
standing in the back row between
Schuette
(deceased) and
Richardson
(deceased)
is Bob
Alderdice. I wrote the copy below the photo and even mention
Bob wearing a big McCarthy button. Although it was 35 years ago, I
seem to recall a conversation with him about being reported as dead and
he said something like, "Do I look dead?" I have now looked in SS
Death Records and found 4 Robert Alderdices born in 1907, 1929,
1939 and 1950. Only the 1929 could be of interest. Our commencement
program lists him as Robert John Alderdice. I found the obit
for the one born in 1929 and it was Robert James Alderdice, an
architect who died in Orlando, FL in 1986. I didn't find much in
Google, but saw one story about a Pittsburgh Councilman named Robert
J. Alderdice in 1926 who might be Bob's dad. Bob was
a formidable member of our class graduating with High Honors
and becoming an attorney. It sure would be nice to bring closure to
this mystery. I will continue to work on this one, but I'm not sure
where to go next. I don't even know if Bob got married. You'd
think someone in our class would have kept up with him. Bob
Woeber (deceased), if you ever send another mass email to all alums, what
about raising the question, has anyone seen Alderdice?

2007: Update on
Bob Alderdice:
I ran into him at Western Electric Cafeteria in New York City in early
1965. He was a lawyer and had been a partner in a Cleveland firm
but had to give it up because of too much stress. He had taken a
job with ATT in the legal dept. He was handling easements and
rights of way in the city. We met several times over the next few
months.
When I hadn't heard
from him for several weeks, I called his office and got the news that he
had died. Whoever I talked to didn't know anything about him or
wouldn't give me any more info.

Thomas Arganbright, Jr, 88, passed away peacefully at the
Moorings in Arlington Heights on October 20, 2018.
Tom was born
on August 28, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA to Marion, Sr. and
Helen Holden Arganbright. He graduated from Mt. Lebanon
High School in 1948 and Grove City College in 1952 while still
living in western Pennsylvania. At the time of his graduation, the
nation was embroiled in the Korean Conflict, and he enlisted in the
US Army. During his military service he was stationed in Germany
with the Counter Intelligence Corps, which was part of the US Army's
Occupation Forces of West Berlin.
Upon returning home, he began his occupational
career with Alcoa Aluminum in their Cincinnati, OH sales office. It
was in Cincinnati that he met and married Carolyn Cunningham
on December 26, 1959. His association with Alcoa eventually led him
back to the headquarters in Pittsburgh. While there he had the
distinction of becoming the last Marketing Manager for the popular
consumer-foil product "Alcoa Wrap" before its discontinuance in
1975. After moving to Arlington Heights in 1976, Tom then continued
his career in the petroleum-byproducts industry, working
progressively for Exxon Chemical Americas, American-Western
Corporation and finally, Carlisle plastics. He retired in 1992.
In retirement, Tom and Carolyn
developed an appreciation for artwork from the French "Belle Epoque"
period and soon amassed a large gallery of original etchings in
their home, which they enjoyed sharing and discussing with their
many friends. Tom was also a life-long Philatelist,
community singer, lover of the Opera, and an avid sports enthusiast.
Active in community affairs, he ran a local investment club and
served as Vice President of the United Way of Arlington Heights. In
his later years, he always found time to watch his favorite Hawks
and Bulls play.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years,
Carolyn, sister Nancy (Bob Osborn), two children,
David (Margaret) and Lynn (Jim Kreher) of Philadelphia, 5
grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchild.
I find it difficult to type with tears in
my eyes at the loss of Tom, but the joy of having known him
for over 70 years makes my heart sing as I was blessed to have been
his friend. Ton was a great help on this web site over
the years. He will be missed by many - Bill Erdman - October
21, 2018
Tom writes: As my last email
advised, we moved last December to the Moorings retirement home here
in Arlington Hts. We have a large villa with five rooms & 2 baths
on main level with 2 car garage plus finished basement where I have
my office. It is a very nice setup and we had 4 friends that
already lived here.
The neuropathy in my legs restricts my
getting around somewhat and I usually use a cane or walker. I did
pass my driver’s test in August but the instructor suggested I not
take any long trips. Since I was not in shape to make a 65th
reunion, count me out for a 70th. Can’t imagine why anyone is
willing to work on a reunion for 88 year olds. Tom -
October 2013
Thanks for looking for me.
We moved on December 12th and previous phone disconnected. New phone
no. is 847-956-2870 and address is 1023 S. Moorings Dr., Arlington
Hts., IL 60005. We have a villa at The Moorings, a Presbyterian
Retirement Home.
I talked with
Don Martin’s wife (Don
is deceased now) and he is still
suffering some from his stroke but is getting along OK. In Nov.,
my 9 year old computer’s mother board crashed and I had to get a new
computer and so far haven’t been able to reconstruct my email
address book. Tom – December 31st, 2012
Wow, I thought 60
years might be the end of reunions. I'm not sure I can accomplish
the massive effort I put forth in 2008 in locating lost or deceased
class members. Five years have taken some toll on my energy and
Carolyn says I've gone downhill. We are in the process of
moving later this year to a villa in a local retirement home and the
move would have been much easier if we'd done it 5 years ago. I've
lost some strength in my legs and there is much to do in cleaning
out the accumulation of 36 years of stuff in this house. For the
next few months, I won't have much time to look for lost classmates
on the internet. Until we move, Carolyn dictates what I'm
to work on. We don't have firm move date as we're having some
remodeling done and finishing the basement but earliest might be
early November. The reunion is 11 months from now and once you
have a new list of those "lost", I may be able to search for some of
them after the first of the year. Cheers to all the reunion
committee and there is no mystery that all of you are as old as I
am! As always, Tom - September 2012
In answer to an E-mail
checking on him: At my age, there is very little mischief I
can get into. I keep busy scheduling doctor and dentist
appointments. When I look at our website, I think that my listing
has probably the most copy of anyone and I haven't felt the need to
add to it with my current mundane activities. Hope all is well with
you. - Tom - November 2011
Bill,
Sorry to hear the news about
Jack Ross. He
always was a nice guy in high school. I'm getting along OK and my
ankle fusion over 8 months ago is doing fine and the knee
replacement 11 weeks ago is also doing just fine. I walk around the
house easily but when I go out, take my cane along for extra safety
around curbs etc. Tomorrow I see the Dr. to advise about a
shoulder replacement. Nothing like a major rehab with three new
body parts! Tom - May 2009
October 2008 - I got the cast off 4 weeks
ago and I am getting along fairly well. The right leg and foot has
some swelling and I'm wearing a compression stocking. Since my
left knee needs a replacement, when I go out I walk with a cane for
stability. I see my Dr. on Nov. 14 and he may clear me to schedule
the knee replacement as all the cartilage is gone and it's bone on
bone. I guess that those of us who survive 60 years after high
school, usually need body part replacements. But, I can't complain
and I have more to think about than my health.......the stock
market..........who will be the next president, etc. I hope
you're getting along OK and thanks for inquiring about my ankle
recovery. Tom
Bob
& Bill, Well it's just three days to go to the big event and
many will start the celebrating on Friday. Naturally, I would like
to be there but Mt. Lebanon is too far to travel in a wheelchair.
Even though I will miss the event, because of my involvement the
past 3 1/2 months with both of you in planning and finding
classmates, I can take great satisfaction in being a part of the
reunion. When I started the beginning of May, never in my wildest
dreams would I have estimated I could find so many classmates. But
as I proceeded finding a few, it became almost an obsessive
challenge to find more and the results are that
Bill now
manages probably the most complete and best high school class
website on the internet. With
Bob
and his committee
planning, I'm sure the reunion will be a big success. In recalling
the attendees list, I knew most of them, but the only ones I've
stayed in contact with are
Don and
Mary Lou
Martin (Don is
deceased). Tom
- August 2008
I had my
appointment with the Dr. today and he said everything looks good.
He took an x-ray which shows a 13" titanium rod going thru the heal
bone and up into the tibia. There are several screws which hold the
rod in place going thru the ankle bones. You'd expect this would
have me in pain, but I have very little. He put on a weight bearing
cast which allows some weight on that leg, but it's a tenuous
beginning and I have to be careful and use a walker when moving
around. It will be awhile before I can put full weight on that leg,
but I'm making progress. The operation usually requires about 6
weeks before being cast-free..-
Tom , August 2008
My ankle fusion surgery
was successful and I am currently in a wheel chair. I'm getting
along pretty well without any pain. I see my Dr. this Friday and he
may put me in a walking cast, but that's to be determined.
Recovering from ankle surgery is far easier than I expected –
Tom, August 2008
I had the fusion surgery
yesterday and it went OK, but I have to be off it for 10 days and
I'm trying to negotiate various walkers, but it's a challenge plus I
have to take pain pills. I now have a 12" rod up thru the heal bone
and into my tibia plus a few screws to hold things in place while
the bones fuse.. Much to my wife, Carolyn's, displeasure, I've
moved my computer up to the family room. She doesn't understand the
agony of not having computer access. Tom, August 2008
Bob
and Bill, Just so you can see
who you're dealing with these days, here's a photo taken on Memorial
Day after about 150 hours on the internet looking for classmates.
Now that another 6 weeks has gone bye, my overall feeling is one of
satisfaction with our efforts in finding people, but there have been
a few frustrations along the way. In the photo, not sure if the
facial expression is one of satisfaction, frustration or tiredness.
Tom
From
Bill Erdman,
WebMaster: It should be one of satisfaction for many jobs, well
done. Tom did an outstanding job of searching for our
missing Classmates. Without his help we would have had over
100 "Lost" Classmates - He single-handedly (With a little bitty help
from Mary Murrie) whittled the list down to 26 in 2 months of
mind-numbing work!. Thanks, Tom
June 2008 - I guess our
memories of high school and the fun we had with classmates back then
and later at reunions is not shared by everyone as reflected in some
of the feedback we receive occasionally. Out of 370+ classmates, it is
not unusual for a few to feel this way. I recall from the 25th
reunion, I had a few of the students from Castle Shannon mention
they never felt like they fit in with the Mt. Lebanon kids. I
suggest we just respect other's feelings and not bother them for
another 5 years. Tom
May 2008: On the
Sunday "60 Minutes" program, they had a whole segment on Mt. Lebanon
HS. It regarded the current epidemic of the staph infection, MRSA,
mostly among students. Leslie Stahl was there and interviewed
people including 2 football players. There were good shots of the
school, football field, etc.
May 2007 in response to
Jack McCune's death:
It certainly was sad
news to hear about
Jack's
death. Jack
and I enlisted in the army together in the summer of 1952 for 3 years. We
went to infantry basic training at Indiantown Gap near Harrisburg and then
spent 14 months at the Counter Intelligence school outside Baltimore. We
learned how to be "counter spies" then spent 6 months in German language
school and 6 weeks in investigative photography and microfilming. Jack
and I made numerous weekend trips between Baltimore and Pittsburgh in my
1939 Chrysler! We then went to Germany and
Jack was assigned to Stuttgart
and I to Berlin. I had a good time in my 3 year army experience made
all the more enjoyable by being with
Jack
most of the time. He really was a great guy.
Tom
January 2007:
The lack
of correspondence from me is because very little has changed in my life the
past several years other than now going up and down stairs one-at-a-time.
We need to move into a ranch but with 30 years of accumulation, I need to
order a dumpster first. We have merged 6 United Ways in Northwest
Cook county and I still serve on this board which raises over $2.5 million
for allocation to 57 agencies. We haven't taken a trip in 18 mos. and
mostly sit and watch TV and become disgusted with the news from Iraq. Carolyn says I'm partially to blame because I voted for
Bush! Cheers, Tom
January 2006: Bill, I
haven't visited the website in several months. On it today, I noted
some people listed as lost and I went about my web search with results on
Lloyd B
Bartholow (deceased),
Charles A.
Coltman
and
David Guyol
(deceased)
In investigation of further details, all are listed as
approximate age 75. My guess is these are our guys.
I leave it up to you if you want to phone
and confirm they are our lost members.
As I've mentioned before, some classmates
may want to be lost and have little interest in our website. I do recall
that Lloyd was at the 45th reunion.
Tom
February 2005: You may have seen this before and I
also know it is more "endearing" to those that don't live in Pittsburgh
anymore. I never tire of this. My favorite, although not listed below is
. . . jaeatyet? no jew? . . . meaning "have you eaten yet? No I haven't.
Have you?" This type of dialog can take all sort of turns from here. For
instance the reply could be. Na, I wuz thinkin bout goin up street for a
hoagie and some pop but they ran out of pokes to put em in. So they're
using saran wrap and gum bands. Yenz wana come with me? (Yenz is the
plural of yunz)
Ah yes! "Picksburgh." Yunz are from Picksburgh if . .
You didn't have a spring break in high school. You walk carefully when it
is "slippy" outside. You often go down to the "crick." You've told your
children to "red up" their rooms. You can remember telling your little
brother / sister to stop being so "nebby." You've gotten hurt by falling
into a "jaggerbush." Your mother or grandmother has been seen wearing a
"babushka" on her head. You've "warshed" the clothes. I ask you to hand
me one of those "Gum-Bands" you actually know what I'm talking about. You
know you can't drive too fast on the back roads, because of the deer.
You
know Beaver Valley, Turtle Creek, Moon, Mars, Slippery Rock, Greentree and
New Castle are names of towns. (and you've been to most, if not all, of
them.) A girl walks up to three of her girl friends and says, HEY YENZ
GUYS." You hear "you guyses," and don't think twice. (Example..."you guyses house is nice") You know the three rivers by name and understand
that "The Point" isn't just on a writing instrument. Someone refers to
"The Mon" or "The Yough" and you know exactly what they're talking about. You remember the blizzard of 1994 (or 1976, or 1939, or...) and remember
not being able to go outside because the snow was over your head and you
would have suffocated. Someone starts the chant, "Here we go Still-ers!"
and you join in. In the proper cadence. Waving the appropriately colored
towel.
Bob Prince and "There's a bug loose on the rug." hold special
meaning for you. You've either eaten a Farkleberry Tart or know someone
who has. You drink pop, eat hoagies, love perogies and one of your
favorite sandwiches actually has french fries ON it. You know what a
"still mill" is. You expect temps in the winter to be record breaking cold
and temps in the summer to be record breaking hot. You know what Eat 'N
Park is and frequently ate breakfast there at 2:00 AM after the bar closed
and made fun of people. You order "dippy eggs" in a restaurant and get
exactly what you wanted. You spent your summers, or a school picnic, at Kennywood, Sand Castle, or Idlewild. You've been to the Braun's Bread
Plant or Story Book Forest for a school field trip.
"Chipped ham" was
always in your refrigerator when you were growin up. You refuse to buy any
condiments besides Heinz unless a Pittsburgh athlete's picture is on the
side of the container. Franco, Roberto, and Mario don't need last names
and you can recite their exploits by heart. Your last name has 8 or more
letters in it (and you either have a 'Z,' 'U' or a 'ski' somewhere in
there) and nobody can pronounce it. And oft times, even if your name has
fewer letters, folks still can't pronounce it. Food at a wedding reception
consists of rigatoni, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut and polska kielbasa.
Send this on to family and friends who used to live in the Pittsburgh Area
as well as to those who have never lived there, just so they can
appreciate how different western PA really is! I wonder how many of Yunz
guys actually understood all dat? Some folks just don't get dem things.

the

Back
in

I
met
Tom

when
we
both
served
on
the

and
he
was
a
great
guy.
Though
their

I
found
it
at

Incidentally,
the
author
is
Brian

and
the
price
at

for
a

is
$7.77
plus
$3.29

Even
though

I

give

April

our

I
expect
most are
aware
of
it
and
those

an

have

by
now
and
the
possibility
of

is
getting
rather
remote.

just
more
slowly

There
is
a

There
is
no

for
Claire

but
there
is
a
Eraina

Berkshire
Dr.

Possibly
her

There
are
lots
of

so
this

be
a
long
shot,
but
it
is
her
last
name
in
town
where
she

Not
sure
how
much
you
are
doing
with
the
website
these
days,
(everything
I
can,
Tom)
but
I
pass
this
along
for
whatever
it's
worth.
If
you're
talking
with
Bob Woeber
(deceased),
I'd
say
trying
to
have
a
55th
reunion
is
a
stretch
and
may
not
be
worth
the
effort.
The
ranks
are
dwindling
and
many
of
those
still
alive
are
not
in
Pittsburgh
and
not
inclined
to
travel.
I
didn't
make
the
50th
and
it's
unlikely
I'd
be
there
for
55.
I
think
the
website
is
a
great
way
to
stay
in
touch and
only
wish
a
few
more
were
using
it.
I
guess
those
not
on
it
fall
into
three
groups:
those
who
aren't
aware
of
it,
those
who aren't
on
the
internet
and
those
who
don't
care.
Happy
New
Year, Tom
August
15,
2000: One
of
the
downsides
of
being
a
reporter
(or
WebMaster)
is
sometimes
you
have
to
report
very
sad
news
such
as
the
death
of
a
very
dear,
sweet
person
which
all
agree
Kash
was.
Not
that
it
will
totally
restore
your
cheerfulness,
I
thought
I
might
share
a
bit
of
a
more
upbeat
story.
Since
you
seem
to
be
fascinated
that
I
was
an
Intelligence
Officer
(oxymoron,
as
you
say),
I
decided
to
relate
how
this
came
about.
When
we
graduated
in
1952,
our
education
exemptions
expired
and
we
would
be
drafted.
All
I
knew
was
I
didn't
want
to
end
up
in
the
Infantry.
My
uncle
(one
who
lives
in
Daytona
Beach)
had
been
in
the
Army
Counter
Intelligence
Corps
(CIC)
in
WW
II
and
suggested
it
was
a
great
place
to
spend
your
military
obligation,
although
it
required
enlisting
for
3
years,
which
I
ended
up
doing.
When
the
enlistees
gathered
for
transport
to
the
induction
center,
there
was
John
McCune
(deceased)who
was
doing
the
same
thing.
We
struggled
through
16
weeks
of
infantry
basic
training
at
Indiantown
Military
Reservation
outside
Harrisburg
and
when
this
battalion
of
800
graduated
basic
training,
792
got
orders
for
Korea:
John
and
I
went
to
Fort
Holabird
in
a
Baltimore
suburb
for
our
CIC
training.
Our
training
at
Ft.
Holabird
consisted
of
16
weeks
of
investigation
schooling
and
then
6
months
of
German
language
followed
by
8
weeks
of
investigative
photography
and
microfilming.
One
Sunday
in
1953,
lying
on
our
bunks
with
the
Baltimore
Sun,
we
read
about
the
big
Crissman-Funkhouser
society
wedding
and
wondered
if
Peggy Crissman
knew
we
were
in
town
defending
our
country,
would
we
have
gotten
invites?
Finally
in
March
1954,
the
Army
decided
we
were
ready
to
be
turned
loose
in
Europe
as
counter-spies!!
CIC
headquarters
in
Europe
was
in
Stuttgart
and
when
we
reported,
I
was
assigned
to
Berlin
and
Jack
stayed
in
Stuttgart.
I
wondered
how
I
got
Berlin
and
Jack
didn't
and
then
I
learned
the
Colonel
in
charge
at
Stuttgart
wanted
the
CIC
basketball
team
to
win,
so
naturally
he
kept
Jack
there.
As
for
being
and
Intelligence
Officer (Tom, isn't this an oxymoron?),
I
wasn't.
Although
I
held
a
reserve
commission,
I
never
activated
it
which
would
have
extended
my
service,
so
I
was
a
corporal.
However,
CIC
agents
wore
civilian
clothes,
so
most
people
who
knew
me
casually
in
Berlin,
assumed
I
was
CIA.
I
even
had
an
ID
with
a
cover
name,
Martin
T.
Allyson!
At
the
time,
many
Germans
were
trying
to
immigrate
to
the
US
and
our
office
would
check
the
Nazi
Party
files
at
the
Berlin
Document
Center
and
the
Wehrmacht
files
maintained
by
the
French
in
their
sector
of
Berlin.
In
fact,
in
1954,
it
could
be
more
damaging
to
have
been
an
outspoken
anti-Nazi
as
these
people
were
often
Communists
and
because
of
Joe
McCarthy,
they
were
the
enemy,
not
the
defeated
Nazis.
Then
too,
we
had
the
job
of
turning
down
lots
of
the
Frauleins
who
merely
had
designs
of
immigrating
to
the
land
of
the
big
PX.
In
August
1955,
Ike
was
coming
for
a
big
conference
in
Geneva
and
two
of
his
limos
were
landed
in
Bremerhaven
and
had
to
be
driven
to
Geneva.
Since
the
Secret
Service
drivers
were
not
familiar
with
German
road
signs,
we
had
to
put
CIC
agents
in
each
car,
but
I
was
scheduled
to
return
for
mustering
out,
so
I
missed
that
interesting
duty.
My
16
months
in
Berlin
in
1954-55,
when
it
was
a
little
island
of
freedom
behind
the
Iron
Curtain,
is
slightly
higher
on
my
excitement
scale
than
the
three
years
at
Mt.
Lebanon
High
School
and
I
loved
high
school! Tom

Information from
Tom Arganbright
(deceased), May 2008:
Joe August
died January 18, 2005, in Gilbert, AZ
Joe passed away on January 18 2005 in a vets
hospital near Mesa,AZ. Joe was in the Marine Corps and was involved
in Korea at the Chosen Reservoir. He suffered extreme frostbite which led to
later problems.
From
Bill Erdman, WebMaster: Again it is a shame that I have no
more information to give you about one of our classmates. All I know
about Joe is what I learned in high school - He was quiet and
friendly. I can understand his Korean War problems - a lot of them
went around then. Rest easy, Joe. - May 2008
Irvin

From his daughter, Anne, August 1999:
Update on me (Anne ), I still miss Dad terribly, but he would be
very proud to call me Councilwoman, so if you didn't (who would) keep up
on the election stats from May, I won the primary and am unopposed in
the fall.
One question, is
that bad or good? I hope that in ten years Braddock will be once
again a nice place to shop eat and live, we'll see....
Anne Biernacki

November 11th,
1998, Irwin Bachmann's Daughter, Anne Biernacki wrote:
Irvin Bachmann,
as some may remember was stricken with polio in 1947. He did
graduate from Mt Lebanon through DT Watson rehab hospital.
He went on to Pitt
for a 4yr in Business Management. Over the period of the next 30
years he worked at Ted McWillams, McMinn Olds, and DeMor's Lincoln
Mercury as General Office Manager.
Married to Joan
Gerber in 1965 he settled in on Martin Ave in Mt Lebanon.
They adopted
Anne Marie 1968 and
Amy Joan in 1970.
Joan passed
away of cancer in 1979, and he remained single. He retired due to
increased complications from post polio syndrome in 1984.
Gone on to Jesus in
1994. He had spent the last ten years in bed, mostly reading and
teaching Anne
and her daughter all the neat stuff he knew and, most importantly,
praying for everyone.
Grandchildren:
Mandy, 1985,
Brittany 1989, Aaron 1989 and one who he never met, Autumn,
1996.
I know it sounds
depressing, but Dad KNEW there were many people MUCH worse off. We
never felt sorry, it's our cross.
I thank God for our
faith and love, and I quote a neighbor of my father's who knew Dad since
he was a boy, "I never in my life have met a man who wanted children as
badly as (my) your father. When you were adopted, you fulfilled a
life long dream (of Irv's), to have children."
We didn't have
health or money or travel, BUT far more importantly, we have
intelligence, determination, love and appreciation.
I plan on putting
the story of the "lifetime of love" he shared into a novel, basically
because "What goes Around..."
Sincerely, Anne
Bachmann Biernacki.
PS. If anyone that
knew daddy in school has anything they'd like me to know, please e-mail
me. Thanks and always pray for everyone....
Anne Biernacki
sent $50 in memory of her father, Irvin.
In her letter, she
said, "Going through life without him is the single, hardest thing I
deal with, for no person on this planet has ever or will ever give me
the pure, unconditional love that Dad gave me. I would like
everyone to remember Dad as hardworking, dedicated, loving, husband and
father, a gentleman in all aspects of the word, who taught his children
all the graces of love by living it. Wouldn't we all like to be
remembered that way?"

Herbert
Baum, Jr
September 28, 1996
Pittsburgh, PA
40th
Reunion
June 2008: Deceased:
HERB C. BAUM JR.
Date: October 1, 1996
Herb C. Baum Jr.'s
work revolved around houses but his heart was outdoors. His infectious
laugh echoed across the ski slopes, the fishing hole and the hunting
lodge.
And he was more than willing to share his enjoyment with friends and
family members. ''He didn't get a son, so (he) always tried to turn
(his daughters) into hunters,'' said his eldest daughter, Kathryn
Baum Philson of Mt. Lebanon. ''We would go fishing and skiing with
him, but we drew the line at going into the woods with a gun. He had
many 'adopted' sons who would go hunting with him.''
Herb,
who was a mortgage counselor, real estate agent and certified appraiser,
died of heart attack Saturday in his Mt. Lebanon home. He was 66. ''He
was a surrogate father to me,'' said Greg Woodworth of Franklin Park.
''He had three daughters, and his best friend had three sons, and I was
one of the sons. We would all hunt and fish together. He was camp
leader and chief cook and bottle washer.''
Both work and recreation were always a family affair for Herb.
He gained experience in the real estate business by working for his
father's company, the H.C. Baum Agency. He became president of the firm
22 years ago and moved the company from Downtown Pittsburgh to Mt.
Lebanon in 1977.
Philson
later joined her father's company as a real estate agent and certified
appraiser. Herb went into semi-retirement in 1995, but still
remained active with the business. An uncle taught Herb how to
fish and hunt as a youth and he enjoyed the activities all his life.
When he was in his 20s, he and wife, Nancy, learned to ski on
snow and water. He brought along his daughters and later his
grandchildren whenever possible. When he wasn't pursuing these outdoor
hobbies, Herb could be found tending his garden or cooking. And
often his interests converged.
He enjoyed cooking a big breakfast of hash browns, bacon and eggs over
easy for his grandchildren before a day of winter skiing in the Laurel
Highlands or water skiing at Conneaut Lake. At his hunting camp
at Medix Run, Elk County, he was often the one who whipped up dinner.
Though always tasty, the meal sometimes was as much an adventure as the
hunt itself.
''We never knew what he was putting in the recipe,'' Woodworth said.
''You could be eating venison and you'd swear it was filet mignon. You
didn't know unless you asked.'' Woodworth added that part of fun of
hunting with Herb was playing practical jokes with him. One
running gag that he frequently fell for involved shaving cream in a
cigarette lighter.
When he would awake for an early morning smoke, Herb would flick
the lighter only to have shaving cream squirt all over him. ''He was
always good for laugh,'' Woodworth said.
Herb
was a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Board of Realtors and the
National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers. He also was a past
president of the Mt. Lebanon Lions Club and of the Mountain Club in
Champion. In addition to Philson, Herb is survived by his
wife, Nancy; two other daughters, Susan Treacy of Conneaut
Lake and Barbara of Mt. Lebanon; a brother James of
Athens, Texas; and six grandchildren.

I remember Gretel well. She was a happy person to be around

it was a great time to be alive. How times change and how we
change. It's good to remember those that smiled with you and spoke
kindly to you. Gretel

in his circle of close friends but he was always pleasant to
those around him - a rare quality in our high school
I'm sorry he didn't follow up on his plan to send us more
information. I'm sad that I didn't know more about his
life and accomplishments -
Bill

Virginia Lee Carrell Sommerfeld, 80, died May 2, 2011
with her son by her side in Spring Hill, Florida. A
memorial service was held on Friday, May 6.
Known to
her friends as Jini, she was born in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania on December 16, 1930 to Darwin Faulk Carrell
and Kathryn McLaughlin Smith. She graduated from Mt.
Lebanon High School and began modeling for Kaufmann’s
Department Stores. On September 7, 1951 she married
Richard Piatt Sommerfeld, Sr. of Dormont, Pennsylvania
at Mt. Lebanon Presbyterian Church. They were married for
57 years.
She was
among the first skiers at Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven,
Florida, performing during summer vacations. In 1988, she
retired from the Fairfax County Public System, Department of
Transportation as a secretary to the department head.
Volunteerism has always been a major part of her life. When
her sons were in Cub Scouts, she served as a Den Mother and
later as a member on the Boy Scout Troop Committee. In 1980
she was recognized by Fairfax County for her work with the
Commission on Aging. Since moving to Spring Hill, Mrs. Sommerfeld helped
raise thousands of dollars for the Susan G. Koman Breast
Cancer Foundation and also assisted Dr. Adel Eldin with
organizing his Annual Family Health Fairs. In 2008, she
received the Frist Humanitarian Award from HCA. She served
as Co-Chairman of Oak Hill Hospital’s Senior Friends and
most recently served as President of the Oak Hill Hospital
Volunteers Association until the time of her death.
Mrs. Sommerfeld is
survived by her son, Richard P. Sommerfeld, Jr. of
Falls Church,Virginia, two grandsons, Evan W. Sommerfeld of
Newport News, Virginia and Carl H.Sommerfeld of
Gilbert, Arizona and her sister, Suzanne Carrell Cole
of Rock Hill, South Carolina.
She was
preceded in death by her husband, Richard P. Sommerfeld,
Sr. (2009) and son Jeffery C. Sommerfeld (1994).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name
of Virginia C. Sommerfeld and sent to
HPH Hospice Foundation.
Keeping
busy as President of the Oak Hill Hospital Volunteers - 410
strong and still growing. Losing Dick after 58 years
of marriage found that although I have been a Volunteer for
11 years here, never expected to be in the position of
President. Working with wonderful people and enjoying every
minute of it. Still doing "the Cruise thing" that Dick
I enjoyed so much after retirement. We travel with the same
group of good friends. It saddens me to read about so many
of our classmates passing recently. Hitting the 80 mark in
two months and hope to keep as busy as I have been. –
Jini – October 2010
My husband, Dick,
passed away June 24, 2009 quite suddenly.
June 2005: We are doing great here in
Florida. Dick had both hips replaced last year and tho' he is still
using a cane outside the home, we are once again doing more socializing
again after a three year hiatus. We are back to our twice monthly bridge
game with friends we made in Virginia some 40 years ago. They live about 12
miles South of us.
I am still a volunteer at Oak Hill Hospital and love it.
Keeps my mind active and have made many fine friends there. As a matter of
fact, we are leaving on a cruise through the Panama Canal on October 25th
with a bunch that I work with. This will be our 15th cruise since I retired
and hope there will be more in the future.
Jini
December 2004: It has
been a long year. Dick had the left hip replaced in June and
the right one in October. He is doing quite well but needs a bit more
practice on the cane after two years on a walker. This too shall pass
(I hope). Other than that we are fine. I am still a volunteer
at Oak Hill Hospital and also an officer. Keeps me busy and mind
active. Best to you and your family for the holiday
and the coming year ahead. Jini

Joan’s daughter, Anne,
writes from Peabody, Massachusetts: I'm writing with the sad news
that my mother, Joan Monger, passed away on Aug. 29, 2020.
She went out the way she always wanted to go, quickly, and I hope
painlessly, sitting in her favorite chair. As her wise nurse said,
“I hope we all can find peace in the fact that she was loved and
cared for and had a great meal and went fast and peacefully with
people around her.” - November 2020
Joan's daughter, Anne, sent
me a change of address for Joan - See above.

August 2008:
Bill
Erdman called Joan while he and Kay were
passing through Wenham to see if we could take her to lunch or
dinner but she was on her way to visit relatives in several
different cities and didn't know when she would be back. She
asked for a rain check.
June
2008: Hi
Bill, I'm happy to
send along some news and greetings to my fellow classmates. I
attended Elmira College for a couple years and was working in
Pittsburgh when I met and married Joseph Monger, a Tennessee
native whose Air Force fighter group was stationed at Greater Pitt.
We were married for 52 years and during that time resided mostly in
Massachusetts, but did a fair bit of traveling around the country
and more recently to Europe. By the time of his death in 2004, we
had moved to Wenham, north of Boston, to be near our daughter and
her husband. My son and his family live in Maryland and I try to
visit often. I have 3 grandchildren who range in age from 15 to 22,
the oldest of whom graduated from Harvard this year. I've had a few
minor health issues over the years, but am feeling pretty good these
days. Best wishes to all!
